Literary criticism and reviews
I particularly enjoy writing literary criticism, reviews and review essays aimed at a non-specialist audience. Most of my recent reviews have appeared either in the Times Literary Supplement (for instance, this review of Toby Martinez de las Rivas’ latest collection of poetry) or in The Friday Poem. I have also published essays and reviews in Literary Review, Portico, PN Review, The Fortnightly Review, Marginalia, The Little Review and The Dark Horse.
I write regularly about poetry in several languages and from a range of periods in my own successful substack, Horace & friends. This sometimes includes reviews of recent books (like this somewhat controversial review of the 2024 T. S. Eliot prize-winning collection Self-Portrait as Othello by Jason Allen-Paisant). I publish a weekly essay which is free for everyone for four weeks. Older pieces are paywalled, as are substack versions of essays commissioned elsewhere.
